Melbourne's Street wear

Melbourne is really the real down under of the down under country, we endure the longest winter months compare to the rest of the country. But the upside of that is Melbourne is so fashionable, we're more creative and more individual and very European influenced.

It's supposed to be summer right now in Melbourne but lately it feels like we're back in the middle of Winter again. Due to the unpredictable climate, it's actually making the Melbourne Fashionistas even more creative and they're becoming like the ones you see on the streets of Paris or Milan...

Street wear in Melbourne can be interpreted in different ways and really depends on where to go to see the best of Melbourne. I'd put different styles of Street wear in Melbourne in a few categories....  Brunswick St, Fitzroy, Chapel St South Yarra, Collins St, Flinder's Lane.....

Brunswick St's Fashionistas are random, alternative, thrift store meets arts and quirkiness take on fashion....

Chapel St's are a mix of try hard and genuine street wear enthusiasts like "Sass and Bide" lovers but at the same time, there's "Supre" and "Dotti" loyalties....

Collins St's are Desiger's lovers, some wear real designers some try to imitate the designer's looks, some succeed, some don't.

Flinder's Lane and Little Collins' are more individual, a mix of high fashion with local exclusive designers and lots of creativity. There's no shortage of Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant and Balmain inspirations.

A snap shot of what i think is the look that really represents Melbourne's Street wear would be from Balmain's Spring 2011 Collection which i think if you like these looks you can achieve it by visiting Sass and Bide (my fav and the only place i go and buy) and Cyberia.

My headband collection

My favourite hair accessories are headbands...the really fancy ones that you can wear night time when you go to an Opera, or a Musical or even just to dress up to go down to your favourite House of Chocolate....

I wear them with my Tutu skirts or dress or galaxy dresses or mini tulip dresses and i'd finish off the outfit with my cut off quilted leather gloves or lace gloves....and last but not least my Chanel.....

How to build a practical and smart shoes collection

Believe it or not i'm not so crazy about shoes, i think they're the biggest waste of money, I'd rather spend the money on an outfit than a pair of new shoes, it's just me.

I have exactly 13 pairs of shoes, half of them i don't wear or i save them for special occasions and 3 pairs out of 13 i wear everyday.

Designers-Italian made-which i have for a number of years now

2x Bianca Buccheri Suede shoes high heels-Cream/Gold and Black/Gold
3x Sempre Di Boots-Tan, Black, Chocolate/Green
1x Gucci Platform high heels-Black
1x Prada Suede Ankle Boots-Purple and Mauve
1x Michael Kors Cork High heels-Tan
2x DKNY Wedge and Platform High heels-Green and Cream

Cheap-Everyday shoes-6 months turn over

2x Aldo Ankle Boots-Black
1x Aldo Platform High heels-Cream

Not many at all, I tend to get rid off my everyday shoes every 6 to 10 months ( i sell them at Camberwell markets ).

I have not spend more than $350 on a pair of designers shoes, all of my Gucci and Prada, i bought them from Siricco with 80% marked down price.

So my question to myself is why am i not crazy about shoes like everybody else ?  I think my theory is, if i invest a high quality selection of Italian made designers styles of boots and heels, really take care of them, clean them every wear and get  the soles done before you wear them, you can wear these shoes forever and ever so you don't many shoes and most you don't wear anyway.

Most shoes out there right now are very seasonal, which means they are hot for 6 months after that they look hideous...for example, gladiator flats ( they look great if you're holidaying in the Greek islands but not anywhere else ) wooden clogs ( yeah, Chanel did them but come on, they are hard to walk in,  they make awful sound and your posture just looks ridiculous ), cowboy boots ( Sienna Miller and Kate Moss started the trend 4 years back but I wouldn't want to be seen in them now), ugg boots ( they're designed to wear at home, not out ), square toe court shoes or boots ( they make your toes/feet look fat ), calf high boots ( they are hideous, they go with nothing, they don't look good with dresses or skirts or even pants or jeans ), white shoes or boots ( unless you're getting married, white shoes are hard to match with clothes, they get dirty and look old quickly)

I have a few tips to share with you on how to build a good collection of shoes and boots to wear for all seasons and for many years.

2xKnee High Boots-Winter wet and cold- don't go for suede boots in cream or camel tones-choose 1 pair of fitted knee high boots to dress up for evening in black with high heels - 1 pair of loose fit and flat heels for day and casual, you can wear them over your jeans or over thick leggings or tights.

Jimmy Choo Boots -Net-a-Porter.com
2xAnkle Boots-Winter or Spring or Summer-1 of lace up or zip up peeped toe ankle boots with high heels, they are practical, fantastic for short dresses or skirts, they're edgy and never go out of style and 1 of lower calf ankle boots zip up or lace up, peeped toe or not....
Alexander Mcqueen Boots-Net-a-Porter.com
Alexander Wang Boots-Net-a-Porter.com
2xHigh heels-Spring/Summer strappy or closed slightly round toes, the height is up to you if you are tall and don't need the extra height, go for something that give your feet a slight arch this will give you a fantastic posture and your legs look slimmer and more flattering. If you're petite and need something to pump you up higher, go for slight platform no more than 2.5 cm, anything higher will make you feel wobbly and hard to walk as you can't walk with an extended knee. Colours, should have 1 black and 1 cream, cream shoes go with any bright colour dresses like red, green, blue or purple and they give you the illusion of longer legs where as black shoes will be great for evening with black, grey, gun metal dresses.

1xGood wedge shoes-Spring/Summer, they are comfortable to wear, great for beach parties, BBQs and can be for everyday.

So technically you only need good 7 pairs of designers shoes which should last you for a while with alot of care like clean them and get soles and heels done before you wear them and when you wear them out.

I really don't see the point of having more than 20 pairs of shoes, if you have more than 20, i'm pretty sure that there's at least a few that are great to look at but horrible to wear and also a few from impulse purchases. If you have a big budget for shoes, then go wild but if you're like me, have a small budget for shoes, stick with my advice of choices above when you next hit the shoes department or shop online, you will have a practical and smart collection of shoes.

For work shoes, i'd spend on cheap shoes as you could be wearing them everyday and you could be walking in them alot in sunshine and rain, just 2 pairs of black or cream mid heel or high heels shoes will do.

If you work in Health industry, obviously you'd have to wear appropriate shoes to protect your feet from chemicals and accidents.

If you work in an office environment, i suggest go with these below, you can't go wrong with close toe shoes in cream or black if you can't wear narrow toe shoes, choose a more rounded toe.

If you work in fashion, go for comfortable peeped toe ankle boots, they're fierce, modern and transitional, which means you don't have to spend extra $$$ on another pair for different seasons, you can wear them in winter with leggings/stockings or you can wear them in Summer and they go with skirts or dresses at any length or jeans or pants any shapes and cuts.

Timeless Modern Day Glamour.....

In the 1950's Christian Dior was the first among Cristobal Balenciaga, Hubert De Givenchy...to unfold the new silhouettes to embrace femininity.

Almost every Christian Dior collection of the decade featured a new silhouette, though all kept a narrow waist and a below the knee hemline.

The two contrasting silhouettes that are most remembered are the full skirt and the slim pencil tubular skirt. Women everywhere celebrated and fell in love with the glamourous elegance femininity evolutional silhouettes after the miserable war years in the 40's. Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn....were among the style icons who had shown women around the world the new glamour and the new femininity of the decade.

Fast forward to the latest collection of Spring 2011, forgetting the flower power of the 70's and the randomness of the 80's and the Bandage mini dresses of the 90's.....60 years on...the legacy of the hour glass figure has been relived and looks as glamourous, elegant, feminine as ever.

I was most impressed with Victoria Beckham's Spring 2011 Collection, it's simple, classic, elegant and timeless.

Marc Jacobs has already done it for his Fall 2010 Ready to Wear for Louis Vuitton featuring the big skirts with nipped in waist and embracing the voluptuous silhouettes.

From these inspirational collections, i'm excited the predict that these looks will be HUGE in Europe in 2011 and if our Australian women starting from this Summer which is happening right now up to our coming Winter in June 2011, channel for the classic feminine looks,  big skirted dresses or fitted pencil skirt dresses that you can wear in Spring/Summer and wear a Jacket or a Woollen Knitted Cardigan or Tweed Jacket in Winter, not only that you will be the most fashion forward ( as we're always behind due to having opposite seasons to Europe and US ) you will be the most elegant women in the world and will be inspired by as the French Women.

If you haven't already have these pieces, your next shopping trip, keep these looks below in mind...you can't go wrong....

Tips..
If you shop at chain stores, try, Cue, Veronika Maine, Jigsaw, Alannah Hill, Gorman, Morrison.....
If you shop at exclusive boutiques or designers, try, Scallan and Theodore, Carla Zampatti, Lisa Ho, Collette Dinnigan.....

Big Statement Jewellery.....Small Budget.....

Apart from the Tiffany&Co Pearl Collection, i have a small collection of Tiffany&Co silver jewellery, i don't really have any other jewellery as i think fashion jewellery can be very seasonal and mood driven so i never spent big $$$ on this because i either get sick of them or they're out of fashion.

Recently there was a store popped up at Chadstone called Lovisa www.lovisa.com.au I was sceptical as i thought, yeah, just another Diva shop that kids and teenagers love so there wouldn't be anything in there that's unique and fashion forward enough for me to look at or buy.

I was wrong, the store was surprising organised, they have different sections for different looks, for example, the have the whole wall dedicated for vintage looks, or laced inspired, Indian inspired, pearls and punk. The prices were the most impressive thing there, they are so affordable a big statement necklace that you could pick up from a poshy place for a good $150, here...$29.95

The jewellery looks well made, good materials and very well designed.

I was most interested in the Punk section which is more of my kind of fashion jewellery

If you're not into punk, check these from below, they are great for your next cocktail parties, night outs or a daytime beach parties or even a BBQ which is great with Coral and Turquoise tones.

Drop by Lovisa store when you need a piece of jewellery, check out their website for locations www.Lovisa.com.au
